Go Fly a Kite – Your guide to flying a kite at the beach
This guide will cover everything you need to know to make your beach kite-flying experience a soaring success!
Wind: Your kite’s best friend
The most crucial element for successful kite flying is, undoubtedly, the wind.
- The Sweet Spot: Most single-line kites perform best in a steady breeze of 5 to 25 miles per hour (8-40 km/h).
- Wind Consistency: A steady, consistent wind is far better than a very gusty one, which can cause your kite to repeatedly dive and climb erratically. Wind consistency is usually not a problem in Ocean Shores’ climate.
Where to fly a kite at the beach
The beach offers unparalleled kite-flying territory and you can fly essentially anywhere on the beach. But even here, some spots are better than others.
- Wide open spaces: Look for unobstructed stretches of beach. The more open space you have, the less chance of your kite snagging on something or crashing into people. It’s not uncommon for kites to drop low during wind changes and you don’t want it to fall into another person or group or the path of vehicles.
- Avoid the road: It’s best to avoid flying in the path of vehicles so either closer to the water or dune grass is your best bet. During certain times of the year there’s also sections of beach where vehicles are prohibited but you can walk in and fly free of vehicles.
Where to get a good kite in Ocean Shores
There’s a few places that you can find kites but a long-time favorite is Ocean Shores Kites. They have a wide variety of kites for all skill levels as well as other toys, accessories, and parts.
Have a great flight!
